The Extension Farm Management Program at UW-Madison is surveying Wisconsin farmers to learn more about the opportunities and educational needs on the topics of risk management, crop insurance and grain marketing.
Katie Wantoch, Farm Management Outreach Specialist, says, “Farmers are experiencing challenges in managing their crop farms due to variability of prices received, prices of inputs, supply chain disruptions, access to new markets, and new technologies and practices affecting both yield and quality.” The survey will help educators develop materials and improve curriculum to support Wisconsin farmers in identifying production and marketing risks of their farm business and assist them in making decisions to improve their farm profitability.
The online survey asks crop farmers to share their educational needs for the areas of risk management, crop insurance, and grain marketing. Risk management involves choosing tools and strategies designed to reduce the financial effects of the uncertainties of commodity prices, government policies, crop yields, global economies, weather, human factors, and other conditions that can cause fluctuations in farm income. Crop insurance—a type of property insurance—is a risk management tool often used in conjunction with a grain marketing plan to mitigate market risk.
