“Legal Aspects of Agricultural and Farmland Leasing” a live webinar hosted by Extension Farm Management Program
On Monday, Feb. 5 from 12 (noon) – 1 p.m., join the webinar session to meet the presenters and lean into further discussion on these topics and questions you and others have related to agricultural and farmland leasing.
What makes for a fair, robust, and resilient ag or farmland lease agreement? Thinking things through ahead of time and getting them down on paper protects your time, money, and emotional investment in your farmland.
Extension has developed new materials to help farmers and farmland owners create robust agreements and will offer a live webinar on Monday, Feb. 5 from 12:00 (noon) to 1 p.m. for an opportunity to discuss questions and learn more about agricultural and farmland leases.
Steve Okonek, an Extension Regional Agriculture Educator, will discuss how to define your goals for conservation practices in a lease agreement and avoid common pitfalls between the landlord and renter.
Kelly Wilfert, an Extension Farm Management Outreach Specialist, will discuss the legal aspects of verbal vs. written agreements and how to improve the enforceability of your lease agreement, regardless of whether it is verbal or written. Part of the webinar will also cover negotiating an existing agreement; such as how to ask for updates or a change from a verbal to a written agreement.
“Over one-third of the farmland in Wisconsin is rented, which means our farms have significant risk exposure if the ‘deal’ suddenly changes. We get many questions on leasing issues each year, and as the new Farm Management Legal Risk Outreach Specialist, I’m eager for this first step in addressing common risks and questions,” says Kelly Wilfert.
