Youth Tractor Safety – Student Curriculum
In order for a youth to successfully complete the program and receive the Wisconsin Safe Operation of Tractor and Machinery Certificate of Training they must:
- attend 24 hours of instructional training;
- pass a written exam with a score of 70% or greater; and
- pass a driving exam, which demonstrates competent tractor driving ability in a course with a trailed implement.
The course prepares youth to safely operate tractors of 20 horse-power or greater, and covers the following topics:
- General Farm and Ranch Safety Overview
- Tractor Component Basics
- Tractor Pre-Operational Procedures
- Tractor Operation Basics
- Tractor -Powered Implements
- Self-Propelled Agricultural Equipment
- Operating Agricultural Equipment on Public Roads
- Repairing Agricultural Equipment
- ATV & Utility Vehicle Safety Operation
- Skid Steer Loader, Telehandler and Forklift Operation
- Confined Spaces in Agriculture
- Grain Storage and Handling Facilities
- Working with Animals
- First Aid & Emergency Response
- General Farm and Ranch Hazards

The Operational Exam is designed to evaluate safe
operational skills of participants while independently
operating an agricultural tractor with a towed trailer
through a tractor driving course. There are three sections in the Operational Exam: starting safety, driving safety, and mounting and dismounting safety.
The game map to the right allows youth to practice the portions of the operational exam outside of driving.
