The Wisconsin Youth Tractor and Machinery Safety Certification Program continued its mission in 2025 to equip youth with essential safety skills for operating agricultural equipment, experiencing notable growth across the state.
This year, 36 courses were offered, including six new locations added to better serve Wisconsin’s farming communities. According to instructors surveyed, over 750 youth successfully completed certification, contributing to more than 18,000 hours of instruction. This marks a modest increase from 2024, when just over 700 youth were certified, highlighting the dedication of instructors and organizers who work tirelessly to ensure the safety and preparedness of young agricultural workers.
Digital Engagement & Online Access
The Youth Tractor Safety website, hosted by UW–Madison Division of Extension, continues to be a valuable resource for families seeking training opportunities. In 2025, the site welcomed 2,677 unique visitors and recorded 8,359 total page views, reflecting steady interest in youth tractor safety across Wisconsin.
Course information submitted by instructors is listed in chronological order and displayed on an interactive map, making it easy for families to locate nearby training opportunities.
Behind the Numbers
It’s important to note that the courses listed on the website represent only those whose organizers have communicated their offerings to UW–Madison Division of Extension. As such, the actual number of courses and certified youth may be even higher.
Most courses are held during the spring and early summer months, and the Extension Farm Management Topic Hub is updated regularly as new course information is received.
Curriculum
UW–Madison Extension endorses the Gearing Up for Safety curriculum, developed by Purdue University in collaboration with national farm safety experts. This research-based curriculum ensures youth receive high-quality instruction that meets rigorous safety standards.
Looking Ahead
We remain committed to expanding access to tractor safety training across Wisconsin. By developing and promoting additional course locations, we aim to accommodate more families and ensure that youth are well-prepared to safely operate agricultural machinery.
